A format comparison for counseling, MFT and social work trainees
Triad role-play or AI text practice: which fits today's rep?
Compare a live counseling triad (classmates, an observer, spoken delivery) with solo AI text practice, and choose a format for your next extra rep.
Text-only practice with fictional clients, for adult learners (graduate students and early-career practitioners). Feedback is AI-generated and can be wrong.

Short answer: a live triad gives you people: a classmate playing the client, an observer watching, and the chance to say your words out loud. Solo text practice gives you a typed exchange you can do alone, with time to choose your wording. These are different formats, not better and worse versions of the same thing. If your course assigns triads, text practice doesn't stand in for them.
Here, "triad" means three-person peer role-play, not a company or product.
Three questions to choose a format
- Who is available? A triad needs two classmates at the same time. Text practice needs only you.
- Delivery or wording? If you want to hear yourself, watch your pacing, or see how your tone lands, practice with people. If you want to try several versions of one sentence, a typed exchange lets you do that.
- Where do you want feedback from? In a triad, it comes from peers who saw and heard you. In SeatTime, it's generated by AI, describes what you typed, and can be wrong.
The comparison
For the triad column we use one published course syllabus as an example. Other programs run triads differently.
| Decision | Live peer triad (one course example) | SeatTime text practice |
|---|---|---|
| Who takes part | Three students meet weekly and rotate counselor, client and observer roles. Course syllabus | One learner types to a fictional AI client. How SeatTime works |
| Feedback | Group members practice and give feedback on counseling skills. Course syllabus | AI-generated feedback on the conversation, which can be wrong. How SeatTime works |
| Delivery | Live over webcam, so voice, pacing and expression are part of the practice. Course syllabus | Text only, with no voice or facial delivery. How SeatTime works |
| Scheduling | Set weekly live meetings in this course. Course syllabus | Whenever you choose, within a daily fair-use limit. SeatTime pricing |
| Cost | Not priced separately in the syllabus; depends on your program. Course syllabus | One no-account demo. A free account gives access to three scenarios with feedback; $15/month covers every available scenario, subject to prerequisites and usage limits. SeatTime pricing |
What each format can notice
Take one fictional client line: "I keep agreeing, then wishing I'd said something else."
In a triad, the observer can notice how you said your reply: whether you rushed, how long you paused, and whether your face matched your words. A text transcript can't show any of that. What it does show is the exact words you chose, which you can reread and rewrite.
One way to use both: if a typed exchange left you unsure about a line, bring that invented exchange to your next peer session and try it out loud. Use only made-up material, and follow your course's rules.

Frequently asked questions
Can text practice replace my triad assignment?
No. If your course assigns triads, do them as assigned. SeatTime is optional practice outside your program and doesn't count toward any program, placement or licensing requirement.
Can AI feedback tell me how my tone came across?
Not in SeatTime. Practice is text only, so the feedback sees the words you typed, not your voice or expression. It's generated by AI and can be wrong. For tone, practice with people.
Do I need classmates to use SeatTime?
No. You practice alone with a fictional AI client.
