For MSW students planning field education
Can My Paid Job Be My MSW Field Placement?
CSWE permits paid field placements, while employment-based placement depends on program policy. Prepare the questions and proposal your field office needs.

A paid MSW field placement is possible under CSWE's standards, but that does not automatically make your existing job an approved placement. CSWE leaves employment-based placement policies to individual programs. Start with your field office's policy and approval process before treating work time as field education. Use the suggested worksheet below to prepare a conversation. It is not an approval form, an employment agreement or a promise that your program will accept the arrangement.
Separate two questions
First ask, "May a placement be paid?" Then ask, "May my placement take place at my current employer, under the arrangement I am proposing?" Keep the funding question and the program-approval question separate in your notes.
The CSWE FAQs on field education permit paid placements, including salary or stipend arrangements, and direct students to their field director about program policy. This does not establish an available paid position, a pay rate or approval for your current duties.
Prepare a proposed arrangement, not a conclusion
Before discussing a plan with your employer, ask the field office what information it needs and whether there is a required proposal form. Fill gaps with questions rather than guesses. Keep client details out of your planning document.
| Question for the field office | Information to prepare |
|---|---|
| Does the program permit employment-based placement? | The current policy and any conditions you need explained |
| Which activities would be considered? | A plain-language list of proposed duties, without client information |
| Who would provide field instruction? | The proposed role and what approval is still needed |
| How would learning time be arranged? | Proposed schedule and conflicts to resolve |
| How would time be documented? | The program's form and questions about categories |
| What happens if the job changes or ends? | A question about the required continuation or change process |
CSWE's 2022 EPAS, Standard 3.3.7 addresses program policies for employment-based placements, including what happens if employment ends. Ask your field office for the policy that applies to you.
A fictional proposal exercise
Imagine a student who works in an intake-support role and wants to explore a placement at the same organization. The student has not received program approval. Compare these two ways of framing the request:
"I already work there, so I will put those hours on my field log."
"Could we review whether this proposed arrangement fits the program policy? I have described the duties and schedule, and I still need to confirm the field instructor and approval process."
The second version asks for a decision instead of announcing one. It does not assert that the duties count, that employment supervision is sufficient or that time already worked will be accepted.
If the answer is no or not yet
Ask which specific condition is unresolved and whether a revised proposal may be considered. If the program does not allow the arrangement, ask about other approved placement options and scheduling constraints. Do not solve the gap by renaming employment time or adding fictional practice to an official log.
For a later interview with a potential placement, see field placement interview questions. SeatTime's separate role is optional text rehearsal with fictional AI clients. It does not approve employment-based placements, provide field instruction or supply field hours.
Frequently asked questions
Should I count work time while a proposal is under review?
Do not assume it will be accepted. Ask the field office when an approved arrangement may begin and how any earlier time must be handled.
What should I ask about supervision at my employer?
Ask who would serve as the field instructor, what approval they need, how field learning supervision would be scheduled and how concerns involving your employment would be handled.
What if my job duties or employment change?
Contact your field office through its agreed process and ask whether the placement plan needs revision. Before starting, ask what contingency plan applies if the employment arrangement ends.
Can SeatTime replace field hours if my work schedule is full?
No. SeatTime provides optional fictional rehearsal. Its reps do not count toward field education, practicum or licensure hours.
