Addiction IOP
- Client background
- Marcus is participating in an addiction intensive outpatient program (IOP) under court mandate following his second DUI. He takes pride in being a dependable, hardworking provider and does not believe he needs to alter his drinking patterns.
- Where this session starts
- You are meeting Marcus for your third individual session. Before you introduce today's agenda, Marcus cuts in to defend his lifestyle and remind you of the court mandate. Respond directly to what he brings to the room.
- Your practice goal
- Reflect sustain talk without persuading or confronting; soften sustain talk, and do not argue.
- What the coach will look for
- Reflected his sustain talk instead of debating it
- Met the jab with repair, not argument
- Didn't persuade, warn, or say 'problem'
- Affirmed something real
- Marcus said something other than 'I'm fine'
- How to begin
- Read Marcus's opening statement below, then respond in your counselor role. Pick up the dialogue naturally from that statement—there's no need to introduce yourself or restart the session.
This is a simulated practice exercise with an AI client. You can request hints, rewind a turn, or pause for silence whenever you need. Detailed coaching feedback is provided after you finish.
Practice tip
This scenario is Softening Sustain Talk (MITI 4.2), not the old 'rolling with resistance' frame. Sustain talk is the status-quo side — twenty years, never missed a shift — reflect it, don't debate. Discord is a jab at you or the mandate — repair it ('you didn't pick this'), don't roll with it. Treating a jab as sustain talk is the miss. The righting reflex will push you to correct him. Affirm what is real. Persuading or confronting will lose him.
After your first reply: hints, rewind, and allowing silence. They never count against you.
